Behind the Scenes at The American West

A few pics from the first episode of THE AMERICAN WEST.

Bam Bam!

When I was originally cast as one of Crazy Horse's warriors, I was told on set that I was too big in size and needed to keep my shirt on. Historically, Indians were lanky, but still very strong. Well, this was a bit upsetting because it was in the middle of August and very hot. The costumes were all authentic leather, buckskin, animal fur, and various beads. I know...whaaaaa! Many of the costumes were the same ones used in DANCES WITH WOLVES. Anyway, for this battle scene, the stunt coordinator had us all line up in full costume and decided which weapon to give us. While others were given rocks, tomahawks, and bow and arrows (they were all rubber...movie magic), he took one look at me and said, "You get the club. Is that okay Bamm Bamm?...and lose the shirt."

Bamm Bamm!?! Bamm Bamm?...Bamm Bamm!
(he was the club swinging baby of Barney and Betty Rubble from THE FLINTSTONES cartoon)

The Union soldier/stuntman I was paired with choreographed our fight scene and had me take a few punches and then over power him as I eventually swung my rubber club like...Bamm Bamm...and crushed his skull.

The other scenes I was in are not as exciting, but more dramatic. I don't have any lines and I'm not upset about that. I can't speak Lakota and didn't want to attempt it. The other Indians were more comfortable with the language and actual Sioux Indians. I was just very happy to be a part of this production and look forward to the rest of the series.

Promoting The American West

I know I mentioned this earlier this week, but I want to keep promoting this show. If you enjoy Westerns, learning about American History, and want to see a non Hollywood glitz and glamour telling of iconic figures most of us know by name, then set your DVRs for AMC's THE AMERICAN WEST. It premieres this Saturday night at 10pm. If the editors were gracious, you should see me in the first episode. After it premieres, I can share more about it and post pics.

Preperation

I absolutely love being given a script and then acting in front of the camera. With the right editor, sound, set, lighting, make up, effects, props, other actors, and director, you can look like a cool million. It's a rush and a very close rush to the experience of performing on stage.

In the stage play DUET, I'm playing Dan, a veteran of the suicide experience. Julio Valentin is playing Ben, a younger man new to the unfortunate and sad life choice. Our characters have a chance encounter on the ledge of a high-rise building as they prepare to take their last step into eternity.

The past two weeks, our director Jake King, has been guiding Julio and me as we explored our characters, analyzed each line, and kept us in check to tell this emotional story. On Saturday, the curtain goes up at the Davenport Theater in NYC and we will get to do what we love. This will be my 7th time to be in front of a live audience and I love that each show presents a different experience.

Latest Project

I've been working for a little over a month on DEEP UNDERCOVER and having a great shoot. Last night was a mixer to promote the show and premiere the new trailer. Our creator, writer, and director, Mark ShowTime Johnson and his wife Rashira Ladie J Johnson, worked so hard to get this projection going, and after you watch the trailer, hopefully you can see all of the hard work they and the rest of the crew and cast have put in. We have so much more to shoot, and I can't wait to get in front of the camera again. Please watch the video and give it a "Like". Any support is greatly appreciated. Mahalo.

DUET - A play by Mark Rosati

DUET - A play by Mark Rosati

I'm very excited to once again work with Jake King under his direction for this play by playwright Mark Rosati. The three of us first collaborated two years ago when we performed RESTORATION with the beautiful and talented Chelsea Clark. We received some great reviews for that play, and now it's time to up our game with DUET. Rehearsals start tomorrow with the play being performed next weekend.

After reading through the script, I'm curious to discuss the idea/motivation for the character I'm playing and I can't wait to work under Jake's meticulous direction to bring it all together. I'm looking forward to meeting and working with Julio Valentin. And of course I'm also looking forward to performing in NYC again. Yeah, baby!

St Agnes Healthcare Commercial

In early April, I was cast for a commercial for St. Agnes Healthcare. The casting was for a father doing push-ups with his son on his back. No problem. I've been doing push-ups 4-5 days a week from my daily CrossFit workouts. I got this.

Well, we did about a dozen takes and each one I did about seven push-ups, four with the actor playing my son on my back. I started to feel it by the eighth take, but didn't let it show. Even though my part is short in this commercial, it was great fun! Enjoy.

Remembered, Loved and Honored

Remembered, Loved and Honored

As I was driving to the set this morning, I was very well prepared, relaxed, and so I decided to enjoy the drive in the rain and jam to my Prince playlist. I skipped over the random slow songs because I didn't want to break down in tears again. Well, I ended up shedding a few tears, but not because I was sad. Instead I was so happy to see the digital billboards into Philadelphia honoring Prince with images and the years he was with us. Of course I couldn't take pictures of them as I was driving, so I found some on the Internet from other cities around America. It's so beautiful ...

He will live on

First, thank you to those of you who have thought of me during this horrible time in not only my personal life, but to the world of music and the millions of Prince fans around the world. I've struggled since this afternoon with the words I want to type to express my adoration and love for him. Sorry for the length, but I can't sum it all up in one paragraph. ...

Personal Process

Personal Process

In DEEP UNDERCOVER, I'm playing a police Captain in this heavy drama. I like this character because he's very calm and honest. I've played a police Capt. who was the complete opposite...quite fun. Anyway, he cares about his officers and his world is about to explode as his investigation into recent murders starts to unveil who may have really killed his son. What I'm also liking about this production is the high amount of professionalism on set and the actors showing up ready to work with their lines learned, characters developed, and openness to improv to take the scene beyond the writers and directors vision.

We nailed some more scenes this past weekend and we have a lot more to shoot. Some of my biggest and more challenging scenes are coming. I'll be ready.

"Acting is a very personal process. It has to do with expressing your own personality, and discovering the character you're playing through your own experience - so we're all different."

Back at it

This weekend I'll be back to work on the set for DEEP UNDERCOVER. I'm playing the police Captain. What I like about this police chief, compared to other police chiefs I've played, is his tortured soul and how it is driving his passion to bring justice and order to the city without crossing any lines...or does he? MWAHAHAHA

THROWBACK THURSDAY
It wasn't until high school that I started to enjoy reading. My junior year I read classics like THE GRAPES OF WRATH, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, and ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOOS NEST. I remember tearing up as Chief ended McMurphy's pain at the end and then applauding his sense of freedom as he left the institution. Watching the movie only enhanced my experience with this classic. So, when I read that a local theater was having a casting call for the stage adaptation of the book, I jumped at the chance to audition.

I originally auditioned for Chief, but didn't get it. It made sense though. They really needed someone with great height and build to fill that role. I was six inches too short and 40lbs to light. I ended up being cast as one of Nurse Ratched's aides and it was a great role for me.

The cast was top notch and we had a great time performing the show. Even though we stuck to the script and new all our cues, the opening of the second act was different each show as the actors in the ward found a new and hilarious way to express their characters emotional abandonment. The audience loved it and everyone was laughing hysterically at the circus going on. I even got into it and the director had to wave me down to go break it up. Okay, so I missed my cue on that one.

Well, I have only done one other stage production since then because I'm primarily doing film, TV, and commercial and print modeling, but my time with this cast is definitely one of the highlights of my acting journey. #tbt #actorslife

THROWBACK THURSDAY
As the week comes to a close, I have a commercial audition tomorrow and filming on my next crime drama webseries, DEEP UNDERCOVER, this weekend. No action scenes, yet. Thank goodness. My body still aches from the start of the CrossFit Open competition.

Anyway, this came up on my history. DEPLETED was a webseries that had great writing, a great cast, and a good story. Unfortunately, it never got past the trailer due to scheduling conflicts. Meh. It's all part of the business. It was a fun couple of days of filming three years ago. #tbt #actorslife

Auditioning!

Auditioning!

Back to NYC for an audition. I'm not feeling nervous, but rather excited and perhaps a bit overconfident. Pull the reins back, Wellman. LOL It's so nice to let MEGABUS handle the driving stress for me so I can relax and focus on my delivery. Two monologues; two very different characters. Yeah, baby!
